Certain models of the Newell motor home have releasing the door latches sometimes to the surprise of owners.

Imagine driving out on the open road, finally a chance to go on a long vacation and see the countryside. You get away from traffic, build up speed, then the rushing sound of air pierces the silence as the drink holder releases its Slurpee. The Stephen King classic “Carrie” some to mind, as it also featured a vehicle capable of operating its own doors.

An electrical problem has been blamed for the issue, with the door wiring long strung long enough through the body of the vehicle.

Newell has offered to replace the malfunctioning component at dealerships, customers are also encouraged to contact the national vehicle safety hot line.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration – Newell is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 motor coaches manufactured from march 12, 2009 through march 29, 2010. The entry door may suddenly open due to a wiring short. If this occurred during travel it could cause driver distraction, and/or allowing someone who is not seated to fall out of the coach causing injury or death.

Fix
Dealers will add a safety interlock system that removes all electrical power to the door when the parking brake is released. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall began on may 19, 2010. Owners may contact Newell at 1-888-963-9355. Owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration’s vehicle safety hotline at:
